Acid water is water with a pH below neutral. The term alone does not tell you what else is in it, whether it is suitable for drinking, or whether it is an effective cleaning product. This article replaces an older list of household uses that did not make those distinctions clearly enough.
Acidic water and electrolysed cleaning products are not interchangeable
A pH reading describes acidity. It is not a complete product specification. A formulated cleaning or disinfecting product must be assessed for its particular ingredients, concentration, intended surface and instructions. Do not assume that water from an ionizer has the same properties as a tested commercial product.
Cleaning, sanitising and disinfecting mean different things
Removing dirt is different from making a validated claim about microorganisms. The US Environmental Protection Agency explains that cleaning, sanitising and disinfecting products have different functions and testing requirements. Its guidance also emphasises following the product directions, including the required contact time. See the EPA explanation of cleaning and disinfection. Use the instructions for the actual product
Do not rely on this article as instructions to apply acidic water to skin, food, pets or household surfaces. The previous suggestions about replacing hand sanitiser, treating skin, sterilising equipment and controlling insects have been withdrawn. They were not a suitable basis for choosing a product or deciding how to use it.
If a product is intended for cleaning, read its label and safety information before use. If it is intended for drinking, use the drinking-water product information. These are separate purposes.
